In 2007, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) listed
antibiotics administered for prophylactic purposes prior to surgery/ procedure as part of its quality reporting program. The measure indicated was within 1 hour prior to surgery(1).The Medical Letter(2) called for 30 minutes or less prior to incision.
Our new benchmark, which is provided here, will be the average time prior to surgery for audited closed medical records that is evidence- based at your facility.Vancomycin will be excluded from this study initially.
